Island Oasis
An awe-inspiring property majestically perched with commanding 360-degree views of the ocean, islands beyond and up country to Haleakala and her summit. From sunrise to sunset, it’s magic, however there is a depth to reach here, to respect and to acknowledge the history of this land and its culture. This was important to the owners and to us, that we weave all of it together. So, the concept was born, Origami for the forms, the roof acting as a delicate coming together of low-pitched roof forms from 4 directions, mirroring the waves dancing in the distance. The pattern surrounding the Origami form is the weaving of wood on the underside of the roof at the ceiling, suspended by steel and infill glazing, and then with the weaving of the metal at the roof and exterior face. We believe that this experience and installation of woven materials pays homage to the craft of weaving that is so prevalent in the Pacific Islands and is grounding to this land with respect and grace.
The love of the ocean and all that the island has to offer brings a playful energy to the owners. They celebrate this in their daily life here. We wanted the architecture to also celebrate this playful and curious approach to life within the light filled and inspiring interior spaces. The floor plan layout from the Entry to the Living Room, Dining, Kitchen and Family Room is designed for intimate, or large gatherings in a seamless indoor/outdoor flow.
The Master Suite is private and tucked away at a view angle focused 100% on an island beyond. The state-of-the-art sliding glazing system in their suite and throughout the home encourages a fluid indoor/outdoor engagement with nature. corner-less glazing system allows fluid indoor/outdoor engagement with nature.
A beautiful, sculptural stair off the Dining Area, leads you upstairs to another Lounge/Living area with ocean and mountain views. Additionally on this level are two Guest Master Suites, one focused on the ocean (makai) and the other on the mountain (mauka).
The design team collaborated on this and came together in such a way to answer this complex call to achieve a masterpiece from every direction and aspect. Experiencing mauka to makai was paramount for the owners. This design allows them to sit as if a gem in between, focusing on either view as they are so inspired.
