LANIHUA RETREAT & FARM

An exercise in patience and passion, this is Lisa’s, owner of Pure Form’s, personal family retreat and farm. After years of having her 3 kiddos say, “Mom, when will we get to live in something that you design” the dream is coming true. She closed on the property at the end of February 2020 right before COVID hit, so the first year of being guardian to this sacred land was filled with working the land, clearing, setting up gardens, finding their animals, and experiencing a time together as a family and with friends in deep purpose, play and lots of learning. Lisa has found it is a bit more challenging to have yourself as a client, but starting from the same place and process that she approaches all the projects she is involved was where she began. Getting to know the land and observing her children and their relationship with the land was the starting point. Living up country on Maui has its own unique climate. The prevailing winds, the moisture, the sun and solar patterns, a lot to consider and take in and to take advantage of as a mechanical system is not needed in this area with temperatures staying quite moderate.

The property has a very gentle slope on a bench up at about 1,470 feet above sea level. It is perched above Maui Gold pineapple fields with unobstructed views toward the North Shore of Maui, and on the flip side expansive views toward Haleakala. It’s a magical place to call home, along with their dairy goats, ducks, dog, cat, tortoise and the wild chickens here and there. The vision on this 2 acre agriculture property is to live sustainably by growing the majority of their food source, vegetables and fruits, and Dairy goats for milk, cheese, yogurt as well as duck eggs for baking needs and protein. The other important aspect is to offer Aloha to those in need to rest, rejuvenate and heal. This property wants to be a living institute for mindful practices and to offer neighborhood and community events centered around music, healing, and sharing the process which Pure Form utilizes through workshops and seminars. Lanihua has a big mission.

The retreat will center around the main residence. The concept for the residence is a contemporary Hawaiian/Bali style with (4) studio/suites under roof with the main level being experienced while under roof, will be almost transparent as an indoor/outdoor experience from every room. As you enter through the front door, you are still outside in the covered open breezeway pulled toward the ocean views beyond, and the salt pool. From this breezeway you can also make your way upstairs to the upper level family hang/lounge which is again under roof, but open on all sides to gaze up to Haleakala or to the North Shore views and Molaki’a off in the distance. Lisa wants to offer her 3 children who are beginning their own independent lives on the mainland a forever home on Maui, in however they need to experience that, longer term or short. Meanwhile, it will serve a place for many to experience and explore island and farm life.

Estimated to begin construction in 2025/26
